Naturopathy is a system of medicine based on the theory that diseases can be successfully treated or prevented without the use of drugs, by techniques such as control of diet, exercise, and massage to mention a few. With a person-centered holistic approach to treatment, patients are able to treat their whole body and improve quality of life, not just mitigate the symptoms presented.

Naturopathy, Acupuncture, Ayurveda are all considered as alternative medicine. Some people also refer to it as “integrative,” or “complementary” medicine. Basically, any system other than Allopathy is an alternative system. Allopathy means “different disease” or it can be interpreted as different method of treating disease, i.e., different than any alternative medicine. Alternative medicines have a holistic approach to treat the whole body of a person, whereas Allopathy focuses to treat the symptoms of the current condition of an illness.

Naturopathy has taken rapid strides in India in recent years. More and more people are now turning to this system of treatment where there is no use of medicine. They are gradually realizing the limitations of the modern medical system and adverse side effects of allopathic drugs. They are becoming increasingly aware that disease is a manifestation of imbalance in the body caused by deficiencies of nutrients, vitamins, minerals including air, water, sunlight and lack of physical exercise. They are becoming increasingly aware that many of the common foods contain valuable natural drugs which can help maintain good health, prevent and treat diseases. They are becoming aware of the reality that modern medical system treats the symptoms and suppresses the disease but does little to ascertain the real cause. Drugs have harmful side-effects and usually hinder the self-healing efforts of the body and make recovery more difficult. Late Sir William Osler, an eminent physician and surgeon, said, when drugs are used, the patient has to recover twice – once from the illness and next from the drug.

Naturopathy is not a new system of treatment, but it is the most ancient and is advanced day by day. The basic principle of nature cure is that the body contains an elaborate healing mechanism which has the power to bring about a return to a healthy condition (which is also known as reversal of disease), provided right methods are employed to enable it to do so. In other words, the power to cure is within the body itself.

As an evidence for Naturopathy, it is worth mentioning here that in this recent pandemic, a team of trained experts under the guidance of Dr. Biswaroop Roy Choudhary has treated about 60 thousand patients across the country and abroad both by physical and virtual approach, without the use of a single drug or oxygen cylinder. They did this by suggesting diet therapy, prone ventilation, use of hand-held fan and other simple techniques. Today, kidney and dialysis patients are also treated by evidence based gravitational resistance and diet. That is the power of Naturopathy and like I said earlier, naturopathy is advancing day by day. Special Thanks to Dr. BRC for taking naturopathy to a much more higher level.
